Element Five:
Improved academics and attendance for students
Element work
• After school programs are in place in the Cloquet and Fond du Lac schools.
• Most students participate for free, and are referred to the program because they need tutoring help or social support; some students who are not referred but desire to attend participate on a fee basis.
• The agenda for participating students includes a lot of variety, from art courses to Accelerated Reader, to Successmaker Math activities, along with drama and environmental projects.
Results
• The Peacemaker position teaches conflict resolution skills
• Mixers, which provide opportunities to socialize between Ojibwe School students and Cloquet School District students have focused on traditional outdoor activities like snowshowing, dog sledding and canoeing.
• Students from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College are volunteering in after school sites at the Ojibwe School and at the Cloquet site. These volunteers will develop into paid mentors in the future.
• All after school staff will have the opportunity to be training in the “Spark” active games for after school programs.
