Ripple Effect

Addressing the issue

SSHS partners have decided to take a proactive approach to bullying prevention. Programming began last year at the Cloquet Middle School, which is using the internationally recognized Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. A critical part of the program's success is ensuring that all adults know how to deal with bullying and reports of bullying.

Element Six: Safe School policies

Element work
• Adoption of or changes to existing school policies that directly relate to school health and safety issues.
• All participating school sites have completed the Coordinated School Health Assessment, which measures a school’s progress toward accepted policies and practices regarding health, safety, discipline, physical education and support services.
• Increase staff development training options in the areas of substance abuse and violence prevention/intervention.

Results
• Each school has adopted goals related to the Coordinated School Health Assessment, and it is hoped that at the end of the SSHS project, most of these goals will be realized.
• At Fond du Lac, changes were made that encouraged much healthier eating and exercise habits among staff and students.
• In Cloquet, the adoption of a district-wide discipline policy is underway through the integration of the Cooperative Discipline program.
