Element Three Goal:
School-based mental health services

Element work
• Ways that school staff can help identify learners at risk, and the intricacies of referral for students who need help.
• Mental health therapists are available at school sites.

Results
• To date, 243 students who suffered without supportive interventions in the past have received mental health therapy services in five school districts.
• About half of these students show improved mental health functioning after the first six-month period of involvement, and say they look forward to contact with the therapist.
• Parents have expressed gratitude for this service.
• Support groups have formed to serve several students with similar needs. These support groups teach students a lot about effective interaction with others, how to be helpful, and how to express emotions appropriately.

Summary
The Element Three Team has submitted applications for extended funding to support mental health services in the schools after the SSHS grant is expended. They are also pursuing third party billing options for year 3.
