Talk About Bullying

A common thread in our community

While there are many factors affecting youth in our community, bullying has emerged as a serious issue in a number of the core elements addressed by SSHS.

According to Alana Friedman, National Olweus Bullying Trainer, bullying is a concern worldwide. “Bullying is a problem in every school system not just those involved with the Safe Schools Healthy Students project,” she said. “In fact, it is an international problem. It occurs in rural and urban areas regardless of school size or economic status of the students.”

Addressing the issue

SSHS partners have decided to take a proactive approach to bullying prevention. Programming began last year at the Cloquet Middle School, which is using the internationally recognized Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. A critical part of the program's success is ensuring that all adults know how to deal with bullying and reports of bullying.
